Description
Across the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsal digital veins course superficially along the dorsal aspects of the toes, then converge proximally into the dorsal metatarsal veins and the dorsal venous arch just distal to the ankle. Medially, tributaries track toward the great saphenous vein anterior to the medial malleolus, while lateral channels drain toward the small saphenous vein posterior to the lateral malleolus. Proximal continuation into the anterior leg follows the superficial venous network over the tibialis anterior region, with multiple venules and communicating branches forming a reticular pattern. Superficial and accessible. Because dorsal digital veins sit directly under thin dorsal skin and sparse subcutaneous fat, this is the surface venous anatomy you meet during routine cannulation attempts on the foot, and the same territory where chronic venous insufficiency can declare itself with dilated superficial veins and dependent edema. The dorsal venous arch also provides a practical map for understanding how superficial flow is rerouted when the great saphenous system is harvested for bypass or disrupted by prior surgery, and why varicosities often cluster around the malleolar regions where major superficial trunks turn.
