Description
Palmar digital veins course along the volar surfaces of the right thumb and fingers, forming paired channels on the radial and ulnar sides of each digit before converging in the palm. Distally, fine venules drain the fingertip pulp and nail bed region, then unite into larger proper palmar digital veins that run proximal to the distal, middle, and proximal phalanges. Superficial transparency of the integument allows the venous network to be appreciated in relation to the palmar creases and the broader superficial palmar venous plexus. Orientation stays anatomical: the thumb lies laterally, the little finger medially. Clinically, this front (palmar) perspective matters because venous return from the digit pads follows predictable pathways that guide incision planning and hemostasis in volar finger surgery, from trigger finger release to flexor tendon sheath exposure. The proper palmar digital veins accompany the proper palmar digital arteries and digital nerves in the neurovascular bundles along the sides of the digits, so a limited lateral approach can spare these structures while still permitting access to the tendon sheath. Small vessels. Big bleeding when handled carelessly.
