Description
Running along the anteromedial aspect of the arm, the paired brachial veins (venae brachiales) accompany the brachial artery from the cubital fossa proximally toward the inferior border of teres major, where they contribute to formation of the axillary vein. Superficial to this deep venous pair, the cephalic vein tracks along the lateral arm and the basilic vein along the medial arm before piercing the brachial fascia to join the deep system. Skeletal landmarks of the shoulder girdle, humerus, and forearm bones provide orientation, while cervical vessels such as the internal jugular veins and common carotid arteries frame the proximal continuation of the central circulation. Color coding distinguishes arterial from venous channels. Clear at a glance. Appreciating the venae comitantes relationship is practical when you are teaching venous return from the upper limb and when you are planning vascular access. The brachial veins sit close to the median nerve and brachial artery in the medial bicipital groove, a relationship that underlies complications of brachial venipuncture or inadvertent arterial cannulation during attempts at deep access. This anterior perspective also supports discussion of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis, including catheter-associated thrombosis extending from the brachial or axillary veins, and the collateral pathways that can recruit the basilic and cephalic channels. Place this plate in gross anatomy labs when covering the arm and axilla, or in nursing and paramedic curricula when contrasting superficial veins used for routine phlebotomy with deep brachial veins that accompany the artery.
