Description
Arising as paired venae comitantes along the medial aspect of the arm, the brachial veins accompany the brachial artery from the cubital fossa proximally toward the axilla. Superficially, the humerus provides the lateral bony reference, while the clavicle and rib cage frame the thoracic inlet superiorly and medially in the broader skeletal context. Multiple venules converge into these deep veins, which course deep to the biceps brachii and adjacent to the median nerve in the anterior compartment. Proximally, the brachial veins unite with the basilic vein near the inferior border of teres major to form the axillary vein. Clinically, this deep-angle presentation is most relevant for understanding upper limb venous return when superficial access fails and deep venous pathology is suspected. Brachial vein thrombosis can occur after peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement or repetitive arm compression, and its proximity to the brachial artery explains why duplex ultrasound assessment often interrogates the neurovascular bundle as a unit. Venipuncture and cannulation strategies also change at the transition to the axillary vein, where lymph nodes and the axillary sheath complicate dissection and catheter positioning. Short segment anatomy matters.
