Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male thoracic cage is defined by the bony ribs posteriorly and the costal cartilages anteriorly as they sweep medially to meet the sternum. Individual costal cartilages form the resilient anterior continuations of ribs 1 to 7, while the cartilages of ribs 8 to 10 converge inferiorly toward the costal margin, outlining the subcostal angle in side view. Superiorly, the clavicle overlies the first rib, and the scapula sits posterolateral to the ribs, with thoracic vertebrae and their spinous processes aligned posterior to the rib heads and necks. Full body context extends the line of the vertebral column into the sacrum and pelvis, with the humerus hanging anterior to the rib cage and the femur projecting inferiorly from the acetabulum. A lateral perspective makes the transition from osseous rib to hyaline costal cartilage easy to teach because the cartilage arc is appreciated without the visual clutter of an anterior sternocostal overlap. Stress injuries and fractures near the costochondral junction, as well as costochondritis at the costosternal junctions, are frequently localized clinically by palpation along these anterior segments.
