Description
Seen in lateral projection, the thoracic cage is dominated by the ribs (costae), their posterior angles sweeping anteroinferiorly from the thoracic vertebrae to the anterior costal cartilages and sternum, which sits just anterior to the vertebral column. Superior ribs sit shorter and more horizontal, while ribs 7 to 10 show a longer arc toward the costal margin, with ribs 11 and 12 terminating as floating ribs without anterior attachment. Adjacent landmarks include the skull superiorly, the vertebral column centrally, and the pelvis inferiorly, with the humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula providing full body orientation. Curvature is the story. This lateral view is the one you want when teaching how rib orientation changes down the thorax and how that geometry relates to respiratory mechanics, bucket-handle motion laterally and pump-handle motion anteriorly. It also mirrors the perspective used in trauma and procedural anatomy: rib fractures commonly occur near the rib angle, and intercostal neurovascular structures lie along the inferior border of each rib, shaping where clinicians place thoracostomy tubes and where surgeons enter the intercostal space to avoid the main neurovascular bundle.
