Description
From a lateral thoracic view, the eleventh ribs (costae XI) arc posteriorly from their heads to the thoracic vertebral bodies, then sweep anteroinferiorly as short, floating ribs without a sternal attachment. Their necks and tubercles sit immediately lateral to the transverse processes, while the rib shafts taper toward a free anterior end that lies inferior to rib X and superior to the iliac crest. The thoracic spine is seen posterior to the rib cage with the thoracolumbar junction nearby, and the lumbar vertebrae appear larger and more robust inferiorly. Intervertebral disc spaces are evident as gaps between vertebral bodies. Rib XI matters because it marks the transition from the thoracic cage to the posterior abdominal wall. In trauma imaging, fractures of the floating ribs (XI and XII) raise concern for associated retroperitoneal injury, and their sharp, mobile anterior ends can contribute to intercostal nerve irritation and localized pain syndromes.
