Description
Presented in lateral profile, the male thoracic cage is shown with the vertebral column, and the eleventh ribs (costae XI) are highlighted along the posterolateral thoracic wall. Each rib curves anteriorly from its head and neck at the thoracolumbar junction toward its shaft and distal end, sitting inferior to the tenth rib and superior to the twelfth. Posteriorly, the head of rib 11 articulates with a single costal facet on the body of T11, rather than spanning two vertebral bodies, while the adjacent transverse processes and spinous processes provide clear bony landmarks for level identification. Intercostal spaces separate the ribs along their length. Rib 11 matters because it is a typical “floating rib” in anterior attachment but has a distinct posterior joint pattern that helps you teach and recognize thoracic levels and rib counting on imaging. The single-facet articulation at T11 is a practical discriminator when differentiating T11 from adjacent vertebrae in skeletal anatomy, and it parallels clinical localization for posterior approaches to the lower thorax where intercostal neurovascular bundles and the pleura sit just deep to the rib. Level matters. Miscounting at the thoracolumbar junction can shift a block or incision by a segment.
