Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the male head, the auricular cartilage (pinna) is rendered in blue against the surrounding soft tissues, with the helix forming the superior and posterior rim and the antihelix curving medially toward the conchal bowl. Inferiorly, the lobule appears as the noncartilaginous continuation, while the tragus and antitragus bracket the intertragic notch anterior and posterior to the external acoustic meatus. Deep to the auricle, the temporal bone and zygomatic arch provide osseous context, and the parotid region lies anteroinferior to the ear where vessels and nerves course toward the face. Elastic cartilage anatomy matters here because the auricle is both a surgical landmark and a frequent site of traumatic deformity. Hematoma between perichondrium and cartilage after blunt injury can progress to cauliflower ear if not drained and compressed, and perichondritis after piercing often targets the scapha and concha, risking cartilage necrosis. The lateral perspective also supports teaching of otoplasty planning, where sutures reshape the antihelical fold and set back a prominent ear by adjusting the concha-mastoid relationship.
