Seen in lateral profile, the facial nerve (nervus facialis, CN VII) emerges from the stylomastoid foramen posterior to the mandibular ramus and enters the parotid region, where the buccal branch courses anteriorly toward the cheek. Its fibers travel superficial to the masseter, then cross the lateral surface of the buccinator in the vicinity of the parotid duct and facial vessels, forming small interconnections with adjacent facial nerve branches. Bony landmarks include the temporal bone, zygomatic arch, maxilla, mandible with dentition, and the cervical vertebrae inferiorly; the auricle is shown in relief just lateral to the mastoid and external acoustic meatus.
