Seen in lateral profile, the inferior lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5) stack anterior to the spinal canal and transition into the sacrum, whose promontory forms the anteriorly projecting superior margin of the pelvic inlet. Inferior to the sacral apex, the coccyx (tailbone) curves anteroinferiorly, with its base articulating at the sacrococcygeal joint and its tip pointing toward the perineum. Intervertebral discs separate the lumbar vertebral bodies, and the lumbar lordosis is readable as a posterior concavity that contrasts with the sacral kyphosis. A short terminal segment.
