Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect, the male L5 vertebra is dominated anteriorly by the large, kidney shaped vertebral body, with the superior and inferior endplates marking the sites of intervertebral disc attachment at L4 to L5 and L5 to S1. Posterior to the body, the pedicle and lamina complete the vertebral arch and outline the vertebral foramen, while the spinous process projects posteriorly and slightly inferiorly in the expected lumbar orientation. A short, thick transverse process extends laterally from the body pedicle junction, and the superior and inferior articular processes rise and descend to form the zygapophysial (facet) joints with adjacent vertebrae. L5 matters because it sits at the transition between the mobile lumbar spine and the fixed sacrum, so it bears high shear forces at the lumbosacral junction and anchors key stabilizers. This lateral perspective clarifies the pars interarticularis region between the superior and inferior articular processes, a common site of stress fracture in spondylolysis that can progress to L5 anterolisthesis on S1.
