Seen from the lateral neck, the thyroid lobe wraps anterolaterally around the upper trachea, while the parathyroid glands appear as small ovoid bodies tucked on the posterior surface of the thyroid, close to the posteromedial border. Superior and inferior parathyroids are positioned at different craniocaudal levels, with the superior gland usually nearer the level of the cricoid cartilage and the inferior gland trending closer to the inferior pole of the thyroid. Superiorly, the laryngeal framework (thyroid and cricoid cartilages) caps the airway, and the tracheal rings extend inferiorly in the midline.
