Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the posterior dilator naris (often treated as the alar part of the nasalis) fans superiorly and posteriorly from the alar cartilage at the margin of the nostril and blends medially with the nasal aponeurosis over the dorsum of the nose. Anterior to it lie the fibers of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi as they descend alongside the nose toward the upper lip, while inferiorly the orbicularis oris forms the muscular ring of the mouth. Posterior and lateral facial landmarks in this view include the masseter over the ramus of the mandible, the temporalis in the temporal fossa, and the sternocleidomastoid coursing obliquely from the mastoid process toward the sternum and clavicle. The auricle is present as a semitransparent guide to surface topography. Small muscle, real airflow effect. Posterior dilator naris activity contributes to flare and stiffening of the nostril during inspiration, a point that becomes clinically relevant when assessing nasal valve compromise, facial nerve dysfunction, or postoperative changes after rhinoplasty where subtle alterations in alar support can narrow the external nasal valve.
