Seen in lateral profile, the posterior dilator naris is positioned on the lateral wall of the nose at the level of the nasal ala, where its fibers blend with the alar cartilage and the overlying soft tissues of the nostril margin. Posterior to it, the nasal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla form the bony support of the nasal bridge, while inferiorly the maxilla carries the upper dentition and the hard palate boundary. Deeper in the nasal cavity, the conchae (nasal turbinates) are rendered in color, sitting medial to the lateral nasal wall and superior to the oral cavity. Cervical vertebrae align inferior to the occipital bone, continuing into the neck in neutral posture. Calling out the posterior dilator naris in a skull-based lateral view helps clarify a common teaching gap: this small alar muscle is often discussed in facial expression but seldom anchored to firm landmarks. The relationship between the alar region and the bony maxilla matters in rhinoplasty and nasal valve work, where subtle changes in alar support or scarring can narrow the external nasal valve and increase inspiratory resistance.
