Description
Seen in lateral profile, the thoracic vertebral column centers on T10, with the vertebral body positioned anterior to the vertebral arch and the spinous process projecting posteriorly within the thoracic kyphosis. The superior and inferior endplates bound the vertebral body, and the pedicles and laminae frame the vertebral foramen behind it. At this level the costal facets sit along the posterolateral vertebral body and pedicle region, reflecting the lower thoracic transition toward single demifacets for rib articulation, while the adjacent cervical lordosis superiorly and lumbar lordosis inferiorly maintain the overall S-shaped alignment. A short segment, but context matters. T10 is a common surface and radiographic landmark, often used to orient levels in trauma surveys and in planning posterior thoracic instrumentation where pedicle morphology and the relationship of the vertebral body to the spinal canal guide safe screw trajectory. The shifting position of the costal facets in the lower thoracic spine also affects rib head articulation and can be relevant when interpreting thoracic CT or MRI for costovertebral joint degeneration, fracture extension, or paravertebral pathology that tracks along the rib.
