Description
Seen in lateral profile, the thoracic spine is rendered with T6 sectioned to expose the vertebral body and posterior elements in relationship to the adjacent intervertebral discs. The inferior costal (demi)facet sits on the posterolateral aspect of the T6 vertebral body near its inferior margin, positioned to articulate with the head of the corresponding rib. Posterior to the body, the pedicle leads into the lamina and spinous process, while the superior and inferior articular processes align to form the zygapophysial joints above and below. The natural thoracic kyphosis reads clearly. T6 is a practical teaching level because it sits near the mid-thoracic apex of kyphosis and within the segment where rib articulation constrains motion, so small changes in disc height or facet alignment can meaningfully alter load transfer.
