Description
Seen in lateral profile, the T10 vertebra centers on a robust vertebral body anteriorly with the vertebral arch and vertebral foramen positioned posterior to it. Superior and inferior articular processes form the zygapophysial joints above and below, while the long, inferiorly slanting spinous process projects posteriorly. Laterally, the transverse process extends from the pedicle lamina junction, and this specimen highlights a common T10 trait: the transverse costal facet is absent, distinguishing it from more typical mid thoracic levels. T10 sits at a transition in thoracic cage mechanics, and the facet pattern matters when you are correlating bony landmarks with rib articulation. At most thoracic levels the tubercle of the rib meets a facet on the transverse process, but at T10 (and consistently at T11 and T12) the costotransverse joint is reduced or absent, shifting the rib head articulation toward the vertebral bodies and altering how posterior thoracotomy exposure and rib disarticulation are approached. This is also the level where learners often confuse the segment with T11, so the presence of a costal demifacet on the body with no transverse facet becomes a reliable teaching point.
