Description

Arising from a superior view, the T10 vertebra is centered on an oval vertebral body anteriorly with the vertebral foramen positioned posterior to it, framed by the pedicles and laminae. Posterolaterally, the superior articular processes present facet surfaces that face posteriorly with a slight lateral orientation, aligning to receive the inferior articular facets of T9. Transverse processes extend laterally from the vertebral arch, and the spinous process projects posteriorly, shorter and more inferiorly angled than in the upper thoracic levels. Costal facets for rib articulation are expected at this level, with the T10 demifacet on the vertebral body and a transverse costal facet that may be reduced compared with T1 to T6. For teaching thoracic biomechanics, this cranial perspective makes the zygapophyseal joint orientation easy to read, and it explains why thoracic rotation persists while flexion and extension are constrained by facet planes and the rib cage. Clinically, T10 is a common reference point in thoracic epidural placement and posterior instrumentation planning because the pedicles narrow relative to lumbar levels and the spinal canal remains smaller, increasing the penalty for medial breach. Rib-related pain and fracture patterns around the 10th rib also gain context when you can correlate costovertebral articulation with adjacent facet joints.
