Description
Centered in a superior view, the T6 vertebra is presented with the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, enclosing the vertebral foramen for the thoracic spinal cord. Along the posterolateral margins, the pedicles lead into the laminae, which converge toward the base of the spinous process, while the transverse processes project laterally on each side. On the superolateral border of the vertebral body, the superior costal demifacets sit just lateral to the vertebral body and anterior to the transverse processes, positioned to receive the head of the sixth rib as part of the costovertebral joint. Thoracic levels matter because they couple spinal mechanics to rib motion, and T6 sits near the mid-thoracic apex where kyphosis and rib cage stiffness often concentrate load. In a superior projection, the relationship between the costal demifacet on the vertebral body and the posterior elements becomes easy to teach, including where osteophytes, compression fractures, or degenerative facet arthropathy can narrow the spinal canal or adjacent foraminal corridors. Small changes here can hurt. Course directors in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal anatomy can drop this into modules on the thoracic spine, costovertebral articulations, and rib numbering, while radiology educators may pair it with axial CT at the mid-thoracic level to reinforce orientation and bony landmarks.
