Description
Viewed superiorly, the T8 (eighth thoracic) vertebra centers on a heart shaped vertebral body positioned anterior to the vertebral foramen, with paired pedicles forming the anterolateral margins of the vertebral arch. Posterior to the foramen, the laminae converge toward the base of the spinous process, while the transverse processes project laterally from the arch for costotransverse articulation and muscular attachment. The superior articular processes and their facets sit posterolaterally, oriented to receive T7 above, and their placement relative to the vertebral canal makes the zygapophyseal joint line easy to appreciate from this perspective. Blue facet highlighting draws attention to the joint surfaces. T8 is a mid thoracic level where thoracic kyphosis, rib cage mechanics, and the coronal bias of thoracic facet orientation intersect, so the superior view helps explain why thoracic rotation is comparatively available while flexion and extension are constrained. That facet geometry also frames common pain generators: the thoracic zygapophyseal joints and their capsular innervation, and the costotransverse joints adjacent to the transverse processes.
