Description
Seen in lateral profile beneath the facial skin, the zygomaticus major arises from the lateral aspect of the zygomatic bone and courses inferomedially toward the modiolus at the corner of the mouth, crossing superficial to the buccinator region. Posterior to its line of pull, the masseter occupies the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, extending superiorly toward the zygomatic arch and inferiorly to the angle of the mandible. Bony context includes the maxilla and mandible with dentition, the zygomatic arch bridging zygomatic and temporal bones, and the temporomandibular joint positioned posterior to the last molars. Functionally, this pairing of a smile elevator (zygomaticus major) with a jaw closer (masseter) matters because facial expression and mastication share the same crowded lateral cheek corridor, where soft tissue swelling or surgical dissection can blur planes.
