Description
Seen in lateral profile, the arachnoid mater drapes over the cerebral convexity, spanning across gyri while bridging sulci to create the subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia mater. Superficial to it, the dura mater forms the outer meningeal envelope along the inner table of the calvaria, while the pia mater closely invests the cortical surface and follows the sulcal contours. Red and blue cerebral vessels course within the subarachnoid compartment on the pial surface, and yellow cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem at the skull base, oriented anteriorly toward the face and inferiorly toward the neck. A lateral meningeal view clarifies why subarachnoid hemorrhage distributes along cisterns and sulci, since arterial bleeding tracks through the same CSF-filled spaces that the arachnoid bridges rather than following the dural compartment. In practice, you teach this when correlating a ruptured berry aneurysm at the circle of Willis with meningeal irritation, or when explaining why blood is excluded from the epidural and subdural spaces unless dura or bridging veins are disrupted. Small space, big consequences.
