Description

Laterally, the humeroulnar (elbow) joint is framed by a thickened fibrous capsule spanning from the distal humerus to the proximal ulna, enclosing the trochlea and trochlear notch as the primary articular partners. The capsular wall blends anteriorly and posteriorly into looser recesses, while its deeper surface is lined by synovium that reflects onto the margins of the articular cartilage. Along the lateral side, the capsule lies adjacent to the region of the radial head and annular ligament, with the lateral collateral ligament complex reinforcing it superficially and the joint space immediately medial to the capsular boundary. Understanding capsular thickness from a lateral perspective matters when you are teaching elbow stability or planning approaches that work around the lateral ligament complex. Posterolateral rotatory instability often follows injury to the lateral ulnar collateral ligament and the adjacent capsule, and this view helps clarify why laxity here permits pathologic supination and subluxation of the ulnohumeral articulation. Arthroscopic portals and open lateral approaches must respect the capsuloligamentous plane near the radiocapitellar region to avoid iatrogenic destabilization. Small structure, big consequences. SciePro clients commonly place this plate in upper limb anatomy courses to differentiate fibrous membrane versus synovium, in orthopedic texts discussing elbow instability patterns, and in surgical education materials outlining lateral elbow exposures and capsular repair. It also fits well in exam prep resources where learners struggle to visualize periarticular relationships in profile. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
