Description
Anteriorly, the fibrous layer of the articular capsule of the humeroulnar joint spans between the distal humerus and the proximal ulna, draping over the trochlea and the ulnar trochlear notch. The capsule blends proximally with the margins of the coronoid and radial fossae and distally with the periosteum along the coronoid process and the anterior margin of the olecranon. Medially it approaches the ulnar (medial) collateral ligament complex, and laterally it thins toward the radial head region where the capsule becomes continuous with the annular ligament. Deep to the fibrous membrane, the synovium lines the anterior recess. This anterior capsule view matters because the humeroulnar compartment is the primary hinge of the elbow and the capsule’s anterior thickening and synovial folds influence both motion and pain patterns. Anterior elbow dislocation and hyperextension injuries commonly strain the anterior capsule, and post-traumatic capsular scarring can contribute to a flexion contracture that limits extension and supination-pronation mechanics at the radiocapitellar joint.
