Description
Seen from a lateral perspective in an adult male, the right lobe of the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, lying immediately inferior to the right dome of the diaphragm and deep to the lower ribs. Its convex diaphragmatic surface faces superolaterally toward the costal pleura, while the inferior (visceral) aspect turns anteroinferiorly toward the hepatic flexure of the colon and the superior pole of the right kidney. Posteriorly, the hepatic parenchyma approaches the vertebral column, with the inferior vena cava groove positioned near the posteromedial liver. A lateral liver view matters because it matches how the organ sits beneath the thoracic cage and how it is encountered during trauma assessment and right upper quadrant procedures. Rib fractures of the lower right thorax can transmit force directly to the hepatic capsule, making lacerations and subcapsular hematoma common in blunt injury patterns.
