Description
Seen in lateral profile with a sagittal cut through the mid thoracic spine, the T8 vertebral body is opened to expose cancellous (trabecular) bone bordered by a thin cortical shell. Superior and inferior endplates define the disc spaces, with the adjacent intervertebral discs separating T7 from T8 and T8 from T9. Posterior to the vertebral body, the vertebral arch and spinous process project dorsally, while the thoracic kyphosis is appreciable as the column curves posteriorly through the thoracic region. Sagittal sectioning at T8 matters because it makes the load bearing architecture of the vertebral body readable at a glance, from the denser subchondral bone under the endplates to the more open trabecular network centrally. Compression fractures in osteoporosis commonly involve the thoracic vertebral bodies, and the mid thoracic level helps teach typical wedge deformity patterns and why endplate integrity predicts disc degeneration after injury.
