Description
Seen in lateral profile, the tibia (shinbone) is presented from the proximal condylar region down the shank to the distal end, emphasizing the lateral tibial condyle and the gently convex contour of the lateral shaft. Superiorly, the lateral condyle and adjacent tibial plateau form the tibial component of the knee joint, with the fibular facet positioned posterolaterally for articulation with the head of the fibula. Inferiorly, the diaphysis narrows before flaring again toward the distal tibia, where the lateral surface leads into the region opposing the fibular notch and the ankle mortise. Clean bony landmarks. Orthopaedic teaching often benefits from a true lateral tibial view because it clarifies what gets hidden in anterior or medial perspectives, the posterolateral corner relationships, the slope of the tibial plateau, and the transition from metaphysis to diaphysis where stress risers develop. That matters in lateral tibial plateau fractures (including split-depression patterns), where reduction aims to restore articular congruity and maintain posterior tibial slope, and in intramedullary nailing, where starting point and proximal segment alignment can be judged against the proximal lateral contour. It also supports discussion of the proximal tibiofibular joint and its proximity to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it winds around the fibular neck, a point of concern during lateral approaches.
