Description
Running anterior to the parotid gland, the transverse facial vein is rendered in lateral profile as it crosses superficial to the masseter muscle and parallels the transverse facial artery along the zygomatic arch. Small venous tributaries from the parotid region and cheek converge on this vessel, which typically drains posteriorly into the superficial temporal vein and then the retromandibular vein within the substance of the gland. Bony landmarks, including the temporal bone, zygomatic bone, mandible, and lateral orbit, anchor the course of the vessel against a clear craniofacial skeleton and cervical spine.
