Description

Running superficially across the cheek, the transverse facial vein tracks laterally from the parotid region toward the zygomatic arch, coursing inferior to the orbit and superior to the buccal region in the anterior view of an adult male head and neck. Its path parallels the transverse facial artery along the lateral face, with small venules draining adjacent territories over the masseter. Surrounding landmarks include the orbicularis oculi superiorly, zygomaticus major crossing the malar prominence, and orbicularis oris encircling the mouth, with the sternocleidomastoid descending inferolaterally in the neck. Orientation matters here. Seen from the front, the transverse facial vein’s relationship to the parotid gland, masseter muscle, and zygomatic arch is clear, which is exactly where clinicians work during parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy) dissection, and repair of traumatic lacerations over the cheek. Venous bleeding from this vessel can be brisk and misleadingly superficial, and its proximity to the parotid duct and facial nerve branches (temporal and zygomatic) makes a clean mental map of this corridor useful before any incision. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching on the superficial venous drainage of the face, in head and neck surgery references discussing preauricular and malar approaches, or in clinical education materials on facial soft-tissue trauma and hemostasis around the zygomaticomaxillary region. It also supports medical publishing needs when differentiating the transverse facial vein from the facial vein proper and from the superficial temporal venous system in anterior facial views. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
