Description
Running superficially along the anterolateral upper limb, the cephalic vein tracks from the dorsolateral venous network of the hand, crosses the radial aspect of the wrist, and ascends along the lateral border of the forearm and brachium. Proximally it lies in the deltopectoral groove between deltoid and pectoralis major, then pierces the clavipectoral fascia to join the axillary vein inferior to the clavicle. The vein’s course is shown in relation to the anterior compartment musculature, including biceps brachii and brachialis in the arm and the radial-sided forearm mass (brachioradialis with adjacent wrist extensors), with tendons narrowing distally toward the carpus, metacarpals, and phalanges. Arterial counterparts are indicated in red, offering orientation at the wrist and elbow where superficial and deep channels interconnect. Cephalic access matters because this vessel is a first-line target for peripheral venous cannulation and for placement of cephalic cutdown lines when antecubital access fails. Its consistent relationship to the deltopectoral interval makes it a practical surgical landmark during pacemaker or ICD lead insertion, and it is also the usual superficial outflow vein harvested or anastomosed in radiocephalic and brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistula planning for hemodialysis.
