Description
Running superficially along the anterolateral upper limb, the cephalic vein begins from the dorsal venous network of the hand, crosses toward the radial (lateral) aspect of the forearm, and ascends anterior to the elbow before continuing up the lateral border of the biceps brachii. Proximally it tracks in the deltopectoral groove between deltoid laterally and pectoralis major medially, then dives deep to pierce the clavipectoral fascia and join the axillary vein just inferior to the clavicle. Underlying bony landmarks, including the humerus, radius, ulna, carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges, provide positional reference for its course in anatomical position. Small superficial tributaries are shown as venules feeding into the main channel. Clinically, this anterior view gives a clean roadmap for superficial venous access and for understanding why cannulation can fail at predictable points, such as near the cubital fossa where valves and perforating connections redirect flow toward the basilic vein via the median cubital vein. Deltopectoral exposure of the cephalic vein remains a standard approach for creating a cephalic cutdown and for introducing leads during pacemaker or ICD implantation, where the transition through the clavipectoral fascia and the cephalic arch can be the limiting segment. A common landmark. When teaching venous return, this superficial pathway also contrasts well with the deeper paired brachial veins accompanying the brachial artery.
