Description
Running along the anterolateral aspect of the left upper limb, the cephalic vein is traced from the dorsolateral hand and radial forearm, crossing superficial to the elbow region and continuing proximally on the lateral border of the biceps brachii. Approaching the shoulder, it ascends in the deltopectoral groove between deltoid laterally and pectoralis major medially, then passes through the deltopectoral triangle to pierce the clavipectoral fascia and join the axillary vein inferior to the clavicle. Superficial tributaries are suggested along the forearm and arm, with underlying muscular landmarks providing orientation. Clear surface anatomy. Venous access is the obvious clinical tie in, but the deltopectoral segment is the teaching point: the cephalic vein can be harvested for venous cutdown or cannulation when distal access fails, and it also provides a familiar route for introducing pacemaker or ICD leads toward the axillary-subclavian system. That same proximal course can be a site of difficult advancement or extravasation when valves, spasm, or sharp angulation at the deltopectoral triangle complicate catheter passage. Correlating the vein to deltoid and pectoralis major helps clarify why shoulder positioning changes the vein’s prominence and trajectory. Ideal placement includes gross anatomy labs on the upper limb, vascular access training materials, and surgical or interventional radiology texts discussing cephalic cutdown, peripherally inserted central catheter alternatives, or device implantation approaches.
