Description
Running along the anteromedial aspect of the forearm and arm, the basilic vein is traced from the superficial venous network of the hand toward the cubital fossa, then proximally along the medial margin of the biceps brachii. The vessel lies superficial to the deep fascia in the distal arm before it pierces the brachial fascia in the mid to proximal arm, where it joins the paired brachial veins to contribute to the axillary vein. Radius and ulna frame the forearm laterally and medially in anatomical position, with the humerus proximal to the elbow articulation and the scapula forming the shoulder girdle landmark. Relationships are clear. For venipuncture planning, this anterior presentation helps you judge why the basilic vein can be generous in caliber yet less forgiving in location: it sits close to the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve and, proximally, the brachial artery and median nerve are only a fascial layer away. That proximity matters during difficult draws, peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement, and after traumatic swelling when superficial landmarks shift. The point where the basilic vein “dives” deep is a practical boundary between easy superficial access and territory where inadvertent arterial puncture or nerve irritation becomes more likely. Know the plunge point. Use this plate in gross anatomy and upper limb dissection labs to teach superficial-to-deep venous transitions, and in nursing or phlebotomy curricula to compare basilic versus cephalic access at the cubital fossa.
