Description
Running superficially along the midline of the anterior forearm, the median antebrachial vein ascends from the palmar venous network toward the cubital fossa, where it typically angles proximally to communicate with the cephalic vein laterally and the basilic vein medially via the median cubital vein. Distally, smaller venules converge around the flexor compartment fascia, with the vessel course tracking anterior to the radius and ulna rather than within the deep paired venae comitantes. Color separation distinguishes veins from adjacent arteries, and the relationship to the volar wrist region helps orient the vessel as it approaches the antecubital region. Superficial anatomy. Big consequence. Venipuncture and cannulation depend on this pattern. The median cubital vein is the usual target for phlebotomy because it lies superficial to the bicipital aponeurosis, a protective layer over the brachial artery and median nerve, while variants in the median antebrachial vein can shift the safest puncture site or make the vessel prone to rolling during access. This view also supports teaching on why inadvertent arterial puncture or nerve irritation can occur when superficial veins are assumed to follow a textbook course. Ideal for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in upper limb blocks, as well as for nursing, phlebotomy, and vascular access training materials that need clear superficial venous mapping of the forearm into the cubital fossa.
