Description
Running along the anterior forearm, the median antebrachial vein (median vein of the forearm) ascends superficially from the palmar venous network toward the cubital fossa, where it approaches the venous plexus near the elbow. Lateral to its upper course, the cephalic vein tracks along the radial (thumb) side, while the basilic vein lies more medial along the ulnar border, creating the familiar superficial venous pattern used for upper-limb access. Deep to these vessels, the radius and ulna frame the interosseous interval, and the humerus sits proximal to the elbow joint, with the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges aligned distally in anatomical position. An anterior perspective makes the cubital fossa landmarks easy to teach: the superficial veins cross a region where the brachial artery bifurcates into the radial and ulnar arteries, and where the bicipital aponeurosis separates the median cubital vein from deeper neurovascular structures. Small anatomical variations matter here. A prominent median antebrachial vein may drain into the basilic vein, the cephalic vein, or via a median cubital connection, and that variability influences venipuncture site selection, catheter direction, and the risk of hematoma with repeated access.
