Description
Seen from the right lateral aspect, the vastus intermedius occupies the anterior compartment of the thigh, lying deep to the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris and draping the anterolateral surface of the femoral shaft. Superiorly it approaches the proximal femur near the greater trochanter and linea aspera region, then continues distally to converge into the quadriceps tendon, which crosses the anterior knee to the patella and on to the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament. Posterior to it, the hamstring mass (biceps femoris most laterally) defines the posterior thigh, while the gluteus maximus forms the superficial buttock contour and the iliotibial tract runs longitudinally along the lateral thigh. Deep bulk. Clear relationships. Lateral orientation helps you separate true vastus intermedius from the overlying vastus lateralis, a distinction that matters when teaching quadriceps mechanics and when discussing anterior knee pain patterns linked to altered patellofemoral tracking.
