Description
Seen in lateral profile, the superficial venous drainage of the neck tracks inferiorly from the face and scalp as the external jugular vein, crossing superficial to the sternocleidomastoid muscle before piercing the deep cervical fascia near the clavicle to reach the subclavian vein. Deeper and more medial, the internal jugular vein descends within the carotid sheath from the jugular foramen toward the thoracic inlet, lying lateral to the common carotid artery and anterior to the vagus nerve. Posteriorly, smaller tributaries such as the posterior external jugular and transverse cervical veins can be appreciated converging toward the supraclavicular region. Blue venous channels dominate the cutaway, while the overlying skin and facial hair preserve surface landmarks. A lateral venous map like this matters when you need to plan access and avoid complications in the crowded cervical corridor. External jugular cannulation, while technically straightforward, is limited by valves and tortuosity and risks misplacement at the venous angle, where the vein meets the subclavian and sits close to the apex of the lung. Internal jugular venous puncture targets the vein in relation to the sternocleidomastoid heads and carotid pulse, so visualizing its depth and sheath relationships helps explain carotid arterial puncture and hematoma as common pitfalls. Orientation is everything.
