Description
Centered on the anterior male thoracoabdominal wall, the upper gastrointestinal tract is positioned beneath the left costal margin, with the distal esophagus descending through the esophageal hiatus to join the gastric cardia and fundus. The stomach (ventricle) sweeps inferolaterally from its lesser curvature toward the greater curvature, with the antrum and pylorus continuing to the first part of the duodenum on the right. Adjacent relationships are emphasized, the left lobe of liver drapes superiorly and medially, the spleen sits posterolateral to the gastric fundus, and the pancreas lies posterior to the gastric body. Surface anatomy remains readable. Gastric pathology is rarely confined to the stomach, and this composition frames that idea with consequences that clinicians track daily: mucosal injury along the antrum and lesser curvature for peptic ulcer disease, proximal involvement around the cardia for reflux-associated disease and hiatal hernia, and mass effect or wall thickening patterns that raise concern for gastric carcinoma. Bleeding risk is tied to named vessels along the curvatures (left and right gastric, left and right gastro-omental), while posterior ulcers bring the pancreas and gastroduodenal artery region into play, a practical reminder of why back pain or brisk upper GI hemorrhage changes urgency. Gastric outlet obstruction is easy to explain when the pyloric canal is shown in continuity with the duodenal bulb.
