Description
Anterior thoracoabdominal cutaway places the male stomach high in the left upper quadrant, with the fundus forming a superior dome beneath the left hemidiaphragm and lateral to the distal esophagus and cardia. Along the proximal greater curvature, the fundic region lies medial to the spleen and anterolateral to the upper pole of the left kidney (partially implied by posterior depth), while the liver and gallbladder occupy the right hypochondrium for orientation. Localized gastric pathologies are indicated at the gastric base (fundus), set against adjacent small-bowel loops and the transverse colon framing the inferior abdomen. Fundal lesions matter because they sit near key endoscopic and surgical landmarks, including the angle of His and the gastroesophageal junction, where orientation errors can lead to missed pathology or incomplete resection. Clinically, the fundus is a common site for fundic gland polyps (often associated with chronic proton pump inhibitor use and familial adenomatous polyposis) and can also harbor proximal gastric adenocarcinoma that may present late because symptoms mimic reflux. Portal hypertension adds another high-stakes differential, gastric fundal varices at the short gastric veins can bleed massively and require a different endoscopic strategy than esophageal varices. Context drives management.
