Description
Seen from the medial aspect, the distal tibia sits superior to the trochlea of the talus, with the medial malleolus forming the medial wall of the tibiotalar mortise at the ankle. Inferior and posterior to the talus, the calcaneus projects as the heel, while anteriorly the talar head meets the navicular, which continues distally toward the cuneiforms, metatarsals, and phalanges. Along the plantar margin, the calcaneus to metatarsal alignment emphasizes the depth of the medial longitudinal arch. Medial contours read cleanly in this orientation. For teaching and clinical communication, a medial view clarifies how load transfers from the tibia through the talus into the talonavicular joint and onward along the arch, a pathway that becomes visually obvious when you follow the talar head to the navicular and first metatarsal ray. This is the view that best supports discussions of pes planus and pes cavus, where arch height and hindfoot alignment change the mechanics of gait and can stress the posterior tibial tendon and spring ligament complex. It also fits well with explanations of medial ankle pain patterns, including tarsal tunnel region relationships posterior to the medial malleolus.
