Description
Running along the medial thigh, the gracilis appears as a long, straplike superficial muscle arising from the body and inferior ramus of the pubis and descending to the proximal medial tibia at the pes anserinus. From this medial perspective, its belly sits anterior to the hamstrings and posterior to the adductor longus region, tapering distally into a narrow tendon that crosses the knee joint. Portions of the pelvic ring, femur, tibia, fibula, and foot bones provide attachment and alignment cues, with tendinous and fascial elements picked out in contrasting tones. Clean landmarks. Because gracilis spans both hip and knee, this view clarifies its dual actions, hip adduction with assisting hip flexion, and knee flexion with medial rotation of the tibia when the knee is flexed. The distal tendon’s relationship to sartorius and semitendinosus at the pes anserinus matters in anteromedial knee pain syndromes and in surgical planning, since the gracilis tendon is commonly harvested for ACL reconstruction grafts and can be implicated in pes anserine bursitis. Medial access also frames where the adductor compartment is approached while keeping a mental map of nearby neurovascular structures, even if they are not the focus here.
