Description
Plantar (inferior) anatomy of the male foot is presented as an osteologic view, with the calcaneus forming the posterior weight-bearing pillar and the talus seated superior to it at the subtalar region. Anterior to the calcaneus, the cuboid aligns laterally while the navicular and three cuneiforms occupy a more medial and anterior position, bridging into the metatarsals and proximal phalanges. Multiple metatarsal shaft fractures are marked along the central rays, and the plantar contour of the heel is visible at the ventral surface of the calcaneus. Articular cartilage is rendered in a contrasting bluish tone at the tarsometatarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints. Plantar perspective matters when you want to relate fracture patterns to load transmission across the longitudinal and transverse arches during stance and push-off.
