Description
Spanning the posterior neck to the thoracolumbar region, the trapezius lies superficial to the paraspinal gutter and tapers laterally toward the scapular spine, while the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia toward the proximal humerus. Along the midline, the erector spinae columns flank the spinous processes, and the posterior deltoid caps the shoulder lateral to the scapula, with triceps brachii forming the bulk of the posterior arm distal to the deltoid. Inferiorly, gluteus maximus overlies the posterior pelvis and proximal femur, the hamstrings (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) course down the posterior thigh, and gastrocnemius sits superficial to soleus in the posterior compartment of the leg. Bone landmarks remain readable beneath the soft tissues. Orientation is clear. A posterior full-body perspective like this is the workhorse view for teaching layered back anatomy and the continuity of fascia, tendon, and muscle from the occiput to the calcaneus. It is also the clearest setup for correlating common pain patterns and entrapments, for example myofascial trigger points in trapezius and levator scapulae, thoracolumbar fascia strain with latissimus dorsi overuse, and proximal hamstring tendinopathy at the ischial tuberosity. The long posterior kinetic chain matters in gait and lifting mechanics, and the posterior view helps explain why scapular dyskinesis often coexists with thoracic extensor weakness and gluteal inhibition.
