Description
Seen from a posterior full body perspective, the occipitalis and posterior auricular region lead into the cervical extensors, with the trapezius spanning from the superior nuchal line and ligamentum nuchae down toward the scapular spine. Across the upper back, the rhomboid major and minor sit deep to trapezius, while the infraspinatus and teres minor occupy the posterior scapula and converge laterally toward the humerus. Inferiorly, latissimus dorsi sweeps superolaterally toward the axilla, the erector spinae columns track vertically adjacent to the spinous processes, and the gluteus maximus forms the prominent posterior hip contour overlying gluteus medius more superolaterally. Along the posterior arm, the triceps brachii defines the dorsal humerus, narrowing distally toward the olecranon, and the forearm extensor compartment fans from the lateral epicondyle toward the dorsal wrist and hand. Distal to the pelvis, the hamstrings (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) frame the popliteal fossa and transition into the posterior leg where gastrocnemius forms the superficial calf over soleus, tapering to the calcaneus via the calcaneal tendon. These relationships matter when teaching myotomes and actions (scapular retraction and depression, shoulder extension and adduction, hip extension, knee flexion, ankle plantarflexion) and when correlating pain patterns to overuse or denervation. The posterior chain is also where clinicians localize common problems such as rotator cuff tendinopathy (infraspinatus), lumbar paraspinal strain, proximal hamstring tendinopathy at the ischial tuberosity, and Achilles tendinopathy at the calcaneal insertion. Use this plate in gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching to anchor posterior muscle identification, actions, and palpation landmarks, and in sports medicine or rehabilitation materials discussing posterior chain training and injury patterns.
