Description
Positioned on the dorsum of the wrist, the dorsal intercarpal ligaments span between adjacent carpal bones across the midcarpal and intercarpal joints. Bands can be inferred bridging the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate, running generally transverse and oblique, with fibers lying posterior (dorsal) to the joint capsules and deep to the extensor tendons. Proximally, the distal radius and ulna frame the carpus, while distally the bases of the metacarpals form the transition into the palm, keeping the ligamentous lattice centered over the carpal rows. Small joints, tight restraints. Dorsal intercarpal ligament anatomy matters because dorsal wrist pain and midcarpal instability often localize to this side of the carpus, and the dorsal capsuloligamentous complex becomes a key landmark in arthroscopic portals and dorsal approaches.
