Description

Immediately lateral to the spinous processes, the erector spinae mass (spinalis, longissimus thoracis, and iliocostalis) runs longitudinally, its fascicles separated by pale tendinous septa and thoracolumbar fascia. Deeper slips consistent with transversospinalis (multifidus and short rotatores) occupy the groove between transverse processes and spinous processes, while fibrous bands spanning adjacent segments suggest the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments along the posterior midline.
