Description

Centered on the thoracic vertebral column of an adult male, the illustration presents the ligamentous restraints that bind adjacent vertebrae while the ribs arc laterally to form the posterior thoracic cage. Along the anterior aspects of the vertebral bodies, the anterior longitudinal ligament runs vertically, with the posterior longitudinal ligament tracking the posterior vertebral bodies within the vertebral canal, immediately anterior to the dural sac. Posteriorly, the ligamenta flava bridge adjacent laminae, while the interspinous and supraspinous ligaments span between and along the tips of the spinous processes; laterally, the intertransverse ligaments occupy the spaces between transverse processes. Red-highlighted intercostal musculature sits between adjacent ribs, superficial and lateral to the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. Thoracic ligament anatomy matters because stiffness here shapes both normal biomechanics and the pattern of injury.
