Description
Centered at the skull base, the sphenoid bone is rendered semi-transparently so its body, greater wings, and pterygoid processes can be read against the surrounding cranium. Posteriorly, the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid processes sit superior to the clivus, where the basilar part of the occipital bone meets the sphenoid at the spheno-occipital synchondrosis. Laterally, the greater wing fans toward the squamous temporal and parietal regions, while the pterygoid plates descend inferiorly toward the posterior maxilla. Bony overlap is the point. A posterior perspective of the sphenoid matters because it orients the central skull base around landmarks that surgeons and radiologists use to navigate the parasellar region. The sella turcica relationship to the clivus and foramen magnum underpins transsphenoidal pituitary routes and endoscopic endonasal approaches, where millimeters separate the operative corridor from the cavernous sinus and internal carotid artery. This angle also helps explain why clival chordomas and invasive pituitary adenomas can alter the contour of the sphenoid body and basilar occiput long before peripheral cranial vault changes appear. Neurosurgery and neuroradiology teaching files use this kind of transparent skull rendering to correlate dry-bone landmarks with sagittal and coronal CT anatomy, and to annotate skull base approaches for pituitary and clival lesions.
