Description
Arising on the posterior aspect of each cerebral hemisphere, the supramarginal gyrus (gyrus supramarginalis) curves around the posterior termination of the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure), forming the anterior component of the inferior parietal lobule. From this posterior perspective, it lies superior to the superior temporal gyrus and anterior to the angular gyrus, with its cortex bounded by the postcentral sulcus more rostrally and the intraparietal sulcus dorsally. Inferior to the occipital poles, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis appear as tightly folded folia, and the superior portion of the brainstem is partly visible in the midline. Symmetrical blue overlays mark the supramarginal region bilaterally. For language and praxis teaching, the supramarginal gyrus is a practical landmark because it sits at the temporoparietal junction where association cortices converge, and it is frequently referenced when localizing dominant-hemisphere perisylvian syndromes. Lesions involving the left supramarginal gyrus often accompany conduction aphasia and phonological working memory deficits, and they can contribute to ideomotor apraxia when inferior parietal networks are disrupted. This posterior view also helps clarify how the gyrus wraps the end of the lateral sulcus, a relationship that can be harder to conceptualize on standard lateral projections. Use this rendering in neuroanatomy lab manuals, speech-language pathology curricula, and neurology or neurosurgery texts discussing inferior parietal lobule anatomy and clinicoanatomic correlation around the perisylvian cortex.
